Abstract

Caudal epidural block is a common procedure used for the treatment of low back pain, providing patients with cost-effective as well as pain-effective management. However, unintentional side effects including local anesthetic toxicity, spinal epidural hematoma, infection, or certain neurogenic complications may lead to permanent neurologic deficits. Therefore, it is essential for the anesthesiologist to be fully aware of all of the anatomical and technical aspects of performing a successful block, along with possessing concrete knowledge of specific pharmacological interactions and potential side effects of local anesthetics and concomitant use of steroids in order to minimize such devastating outcomes. We present the case of a patient who underwent caudal epidural block resulting in severe neuropathic pain along with muscle spasms at an outpatient clinic.
